Columbia, SC – In her latest installment of the fan favorite Hallelujah Series, national bestselling author Lutishia Lovely tackles one of the Black churches’ biggest yet least openly discussed taboos—homosexuality. First Husband, set for a Winter 2018-19 release, tells the story of two handsome, popular, charismatic pastors who meet, fall in love, and hide behind carefully-crafted public personas so that no one finds out. What happens when what’s done in the darkness comes to light? Congregations enthusiastically embrace their first ladies. Can they do the same for a first husband?
Malachi Clark, IV is the heir-apparent to a dynasty. Decades earlier his great-grandfather, the first Malachi, was a founding member of the Church of God’s Holy Trinity, COGHT (pronounced caught), a denomination with roots in the holiness movement of 19th century Methodism. A worldwide organization boasting more than eight million members, COGHT gives literal meaning to biblical tenets and in a world viewed as increasingly immoral, have doubled-down on the institution’s rules of righteous living. Their doors remain closed to those openly embracing the LGBTQ lifestyle.
For Lance Elliott, being a gay Black man is not his biggest challenge. His church, Federal Presbyterian, has an increasingly tolerant policy regarding homosexuality, ordaining gay ministers and both recognizing and performing same sex marriages. Still, Lance feels locked inside the closet. He and Malachi have been best friends for years and if he comes out as an openly gay man, the church world that Malachi navigates is bound to become suspicious of their brotherly bond. So they keep their love affair a secret, until the decision of making their relationship known is taken out of their hands. With millions of lives and dollars at stake, along with the Clark legacy, the gloves come off, lines are drawn and threats are made that if carried out, no amount of prayer can heal.
While it is impossible to estimate the number of people (Americans in general, Christians in particular) who are still in the closet, studies suggest that the number may be as high or higher than those who openly identify as LGBTQ. The latest Gallup poll puts that number at 4.1 percent of the US population, up almost a point and half from just six years ago. According to a recent PEW report, 4 out of 10 of those who’ve come out are rejected by family and/or friends. This furthers the claim by some that the number of proclaimed Christians still closeting their sexual identity, is much higher than the average American believes.
“OMG reads,” are how Lovely’s novels are described by the loyal, supportive readers that have helped this series reach ten books and counting. When asked how long the series will last, Lovely replies, “As long as the lovelies want to read them.”
